Ah, toddlers, busy, curious, and delightfully unpredictable. If just the thought of keeping your little one still for family photos makes you break out in a cold sweat, you’re not alone. The good news? Toddlers often create the most joyful, genuine, and expressive photos when you let them be themselves, which is exactly why this age is one of my favourites to photograph. To help make your next session as stress-free as possible, I’m sharing 5 practical tips below for capturing those precious moments with ease.

1. Embrace the Movement

Toddlers don’t sit still. They explore. They run. They pick up sticks. And honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. My approach is to lean into their natural energy rather than trying to contain it. I’ll guide you with prompts that feel like play, whether that’s turning a stick into a magic wand that can “freeze” everyone in place, or pretending they’re an aeroplane as they’re lifted high into the air. Whatever sparks your little one’s imagination, we’ll use it to keep them engaged and happy. The result is genuine smiles, natural connection, and photos that truly feel like your family.

2. Keep Expectations Light

Take a deep breath and let go of any rigid plans for your session. Toddlers have their own agenda—and that’s part of the fun! When you stay relaxed and playful, your little one picks up on that energy and feels free to be themselves. Some of the best photos aren’t posed at all. They happen when you’re mid-chase, brushing hair out of their eyes, or laughing at their silly antics. Keep your expectations light, embrace the chaos, and you’ll walk away with photos full of real, joyful moments.

3. Snacks and Comforts Are Welcome

Bring a few favourite, non-messy snacks, a drink, and perhaps a beloved comfort toy or blanket. Even if we don’t end up using them, they can be a great safety net if your toddler needs a reset. A quick snack break or cuddle can make all the difference and help everyone relax into the session again.

4. Dress for Play

Comfort is key, as you’ll likely be moving, sitting, lifting, and playing. You might opt for something a little more special than an everyday t-shirt, but it’s always best if your toddler has worn their outfit before and feels comfortable in it. Check that jumpers or layers aren’t scratchy ahead of time, so your little one stays happy throughout the session. Most importantly, choose pieces that make your family feel confident and at ease, as that feeling always comes through in photos.

5. Forget "SAY CHEESE"

It’s completely normal for toddlers to be shy, clingy, or suddenly decide they’re not quite sure about it all. There’s no need to rush past those moments or force your toddler to smile for the camera. I simply work with whatever your child brings. No pressure. Some of the most memorable photos come from these shifts, the way they stay close to you or peek out curiously. It’s all part of who they are right now, and that’s exactly what makes your photos feel real and true to your family.
